So, about as much DW as you would expect, about as many crossovers and multi-era DW fics as you would expect, a few new fandoms (yaaaaay! I'm really glad of that, actually; it's exciting to write for different characters and different worlds), and continuing to support the gay and bisexual agenda, woo. I didn't do as much audio fic as I would have liked, and I have a feeling I won't be writing as much in 2012, but...we'll see how inspired I am as the year goes?

I have ALL THE CHOCOLATE at my house. Please come over and help me eat it.

Also, I've given up before I've even started on reading Yuletide. Not gonna happen, people. I'm hoping I can casually peruse various recs because there is no way in hell I have time this week to sit down and systematically read for myself; and I am going to be adventuring this weekend for the new year. Siiiiiiigh.

(That said, check out the pretty white ships that I am dreaming of", Warehouse 13, what was written for me. YAY.)

I hope everyone had/will have a festive winter holiday. The best gift I got was most assuredly the dry minced garlic from my mom. Oh yeah.

I recorded this for a friend and decided, what the heck, I'll be an attention whore and post it here too.

wishfulaces: (some kind of way out of here)
I suppose technically it is a snow day, since the snow has been falling all day (sideways; thank you, wind), but it was called yesterday afternoon in the midst of all the freezing rain, and earlier this morning I could see the ice lurking under the snow. So however you define it, I am glad not to be out there. Even if I barely have any milk left. Hmph.

(ETA: NO WORK TOMORROW EITHER. OMG I might even have to clean house if this keeps up!)

So! This calls for a meme. Obviously. Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8.

List fifteen of your favourite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, if they're so inclined.

1. Chiana, Farscape.
2. Wadsworth the butler, Clue.
3. Wash, Firefly.
4. Geoffrey Tennant, Slings & Arrows.
5. Mona Ellerby, Adderly.
6. Alec Hardison, Leverage.
7. Kate Beckett, Castle. (In part because Esposito & Ryan are such a duo I couldn't say one or the other?)
8. Cosmo, Singin' in the Rain.
9. Ray Vecchio, dueSouth (This is a COMPLETELY NEW development, as I know it used to be Ray Kowalski. But RayV has kinda edged him out in my rewatch of the past few months; and, really, I find RayK far more interesting these days with Fraser than by himself, largely due to the way Fraser reacts around him and that's a story the fandom's already gone through years ago so I'll shut up now.)
10. Illya Kuryakin, Man from UNCLE.
11. Hannibal Sefton, from the Benjamin January novels by Barbara Hambly.
12. Vala Mal Doran, Stargate SG-1
13. Darien Fawkes, Invisible Man.
14. Mason, Dead Like Me.
15. Death, from the Sandman graphic novels.

And no, I did not put Doctor Who on this list because I probably would have embarrassed myself and said Fitz Kreiner. Or be maddening and say the Doctor without specifying an incarnation. HA.

* Thing 1: A PSA and friendly reminder to all those people out there driving in the snow: DON'T BE A DUMBASS.

* Thing 2: I got paid on Friday! This might seem like a fairly small achievement, considering I am in fact employed, but there was a moment or two of worry there last week. (And yes, I did have a Daniel Jackson moment. So exciting!...not really.)

* Thing 3: I have written three more fics in the past couple weeks, and I really want to work on at least a couple other ideas that are percolating. Fic-writing mojo, where were you hiding for so long???

* Thing 4: I also want to rewatch a bunch of different shows, including the first season of Castle and the entirety of Slings & Arrows. Thankfully both are small. I still don't quite know when I'm going to do that since I'm still in the midst of a second season Castle (hush, I know they're out of order) and entirety-of-dueSouth rewatch. And I've got my mom's DVDs of Simon & Simon and Adderly still and what the hell, it's winter, it's not like I'm going outside much these days anyway.

* Thing 5: Getting up in the morning is haaaaaard. Like, even harder than usual this week. This may have something to do with my abject cowering fear about driving on snowpack and ice. Though we did get permission to go into work at 9 today instead of our usual time.

Fic what I wrote, by month:

obnoxious number of links, therefore cutting )

I'd never written dueSouth before, I wrote a remarkable # of fics involving Amelia Pond (...I am not surprised), I wrote more Leverage and quite respectably too, I continued to pair Ace up with other awesome women (including a god), and I'm a bit surprised I wrote that much SG-1 fic this year. Huh. I didn't make the whole one-fic-a-month goal I've been keeping the past few years (don't ask me why I have such a goal, other than it was something to do, and I think I shall drop it this year), but I still wrote a fair amount. And yes, most of it involved Doctor Who. First fandom, oldest fandom, fandom that is never gonna die. I'm okay with that. I also watched a ridiculous amount of Simon and Simon, Adderly, dueSouth, and probably other shows from the 1980s and 1990s, but I did not write fic for most of those forays into other eras. We should probably all be grateful.

I wish I had done more audio fic; I want to work on that. I also want to keep experimenting writing in new fandoms; I think I did better at that last year. And write more Amy/Rory and 11. Mostly because they make me REMARKABLY HAPPY, and I quite like that feeling.
wishfulaces: (fandom collision)
I am home. At some point, this place became home, and that was very confusing while I was home (with the parents) this weekend, because I kept talking about both places that way.

(I love driving past Chicago at night, by the way. I think it's my favorite view of Chicago, somewhere on I-90 going past the lit-up skyscrapers, all that light pollution thrown up to the sky. Hmmm.)

There was lots of pretty snow on the ground, and my mother and I had ridiculous amounts of glee cooking cornish hens, and my dad and I saw The Tourist, and while my parents still have dial-up they also perversely have digital cable so I was able in fact to watch the Doctor Who Christmas special onna tv on Christmas day and finally show off Matt Smith to my mother and explain to her my despair over accidentally discovering/confirming he is in fact 6 months younger than me ("he looks older," she said at the end of the show), and it was only two days but it was a really good two days to be home. Away from this other home. Whatever.

Also, I got two yuletide fics this year!

The Christmas Bet for yuletide, Castle, focusing on Ryan & Esposito, best background detective duo evah

A Mistress or a Friend, a yuletide madness goodie for me, Hannibal Sefton & Consuela from the Benjamin January novels by Barbara Hambly and OMG seriously, Hannibal Sefton is the best character since somebody Shakespearean. I sort of desperately want to write fic involving him & Julian Kestrel from the Kate Ross novels running into each other at a house party before Hannibal ran away from polite society, and then I smack myself up the head & remind myself how much I hate doing research to write.

More on the DW special )

Right, I'm going to wander off and eat a proper dinner with more substance than cereal, and possibly watch the first episode of dueSouth involving RayK, or Peter Davison as the Doctor. I am in need of comfort tonight, I think. Going/coming home is hard.

Title: faithful friends who are dear to us
Author: aces
Fandom, characters: dueSouth, Ray Vecchio’s family, mildly Ray/Fraser
Word count: approx. 1800 words
Prompt: Fraser’s first Christmas with the Vecchio family, as requested by [personal profile] jenavira.
Summary: Ray loves his family. Even at the holidays.

24 December 1970.
Tracking Jackson Templeton and a party of four, a family visiting their relatives for the holidays. He crashed his plane 50 miles N of here, last radio signal three hours ago. I hope to find them tomorrow, though it means missing another Christmas with Caroline and Benton.

So I was watching Sanctuary last night, and it had one of the detectives from Da Vinci's Inquest on it, only he wasn't talking right so it took me forever to convince myself it really was him, and I kept staring at him and yelling at the tv, "What are you doing with that accent? Put that accent down!"

Canadian actor bingo: about as likely to get old as British actor bingo.

Okay, so I am in fact doing Yuletide this year, but whatever, I saw this on my flist and couldn't resist the opportunity to WRITE MORE FIC (since I've been kinda bad at that this year). So, originally stolen from [livejournal.com profile] cruelest_month, this is an alternative fic exchange.

I really hate not getting people gifts for Christmas or other winter holiday of your choice. And I really cannot afford to buy every awesome one of you the amazing gift you deserve.

So instead I would like to write you something that you would like to read.

wishfulaces: (agatha = AWESOME)
I AM BACK ONLINE. At home, that is. After five hours of recovery CDs, downloading updates, and re-installing software. Brand shiny new hard drive, old casing and operating system. All my bookmarks are gone. It's surprisingly refreshing to be starting out new. I probably won't feel that way next week when attempting to hunt something down that I *knew* I had saved somewhere. Or when I realize how many photographs I'm sure I've lost because I was much crappier at backing up some of my data than I should have been.

Random thoughts I've had in the past week & not posted because I had little Internet access for goofing off:

1. There was a really clever little thought about the changing nature of privacy, specifically from the 18th century through the 21st, and how online media are changing our notions again about privacy, and that was about as far as it got before sputtering out. I'm sure more eloquent people have already said things about this anyway.

2. I had a Leverage vid idea for "Splish Splash" by Bobby Darrin, focusing on Nate and how the team totally invade his space (Bing bang, I saw the whole gang / Dancing on my living room rug...), and then by the end of the second season/beginning of the third, he kinda just...goes along with it (I forgot about the bath / I went and put my dancin shoes on, yeah...). Y'all should be grateful I can't make vids, honestly.

3. Absurd and obscure crossover idea #578: Janos Bartok from Legend has a conversation with Benton Fraser from dueSouth. Mostly because both of them are quite good at changing the world to fit their expectations.

There was more stuff. But it's been a long night, and I still need to get up early tomorrow morning and get through another day of life. Woo.

Adderly, people. Canadian tv show from the latter half of the 1980s. I have to picspam, if only because everyone needs to know how awesome Mona is.

I have in the past few days finally seen both Sherlock and the Paul Gross movie Gunless. Somehow, I don't think those two things really fit in the same sentence together.

Sherlock, not really spoilery, but whatever )

Gunless, also probably not terribly spoilery )

Oh hell.

I watched yesterday's ep of Warehouse 13 )

Seriously, why do I have an ensemble!kink? How does one *do* that? (Quite easily, apparently, considering HOW MANY ensemble shows I like, all apparently without noticing this fact.)

So, yes, fine, there you have it, I'm gonna go back to due South & Adderly now.

ETA: Speaking of due South )
wishfulaces: (travel curse)
I went away from the internet for a few days and stuff blew up on it. As per usual. And now I am rewatching the pilot of due South for reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture. (I'M GOING TO GET THE PHRASING RIGHT. Really. Someday.)

But this weekend I beaded and took walks and played poker and fannish pictionary and ate fondue and poutine for the first time and drank dark chocolate stout and finally watched the Matrix. All with lovely friends and now I have to go back to work tomorrow and I don' wanna.

(But I only have nine more days of work before I escape again. Wheeeee!)

And now I think it's time to collapse. Or maybe download photographic proof of stuff and things, hmmm.

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. (If you absolutely can't write, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer drawings or icons or something instead.)

I have addicted two more people to Slings & Arrows! Muhahahahaha. They're total theatre geeks, though, so it was easy to do so. They've seen the first three eps of the first season and are intent on Netflixing the rest.

We also ate ourselves into a food coma last night and this morning. So long as they make it home safely, though, that's alright.

There is a squirrel ducking in and out of a little snow drift. Its head keeps popping up. It is ridiculously adorable.

I finally, FINALLY finished the last season of Slings & Arrows tonight, [livejournal.com profile] troyswann. I am ashamed how long it took me to do so. I rewatched the first episodes and then watched the ones I hadn't yet, all in the past, four nights. I wept uncontrollably during most of the finale. This seems appropriate. OTOH, it might have been sleep dep. This also seems appropriate.
