The Official: Embrace the horror, you work for the state now.

That line means *so* much more to me now than it did 15 years ago.

I decided a rewatch of Invisible Man was in order. It's making me happy.

Also, 64 DAYS TILL WEDDING OH SHIT BEARS. Other people apparently get joy out of these countdowns. I take a kind of masochistic glee out of checking on that number. I think I would rather invite all of you than half my family to come to the party. No, that's a lie, I think I'd just like to have two parties, one with family and one with all of you. My family's had a lot of funerals lately, they need to have a happy reason to come together and celebrate. But dammit, I would totally dig a geeky party of happiness. (Maybe we *will* figure out how to have ourselves a TARDIS wedding cake. MAYBE.)

So I was watching something on TNT earlier this week--Leverage or Rizzoli & Isles--and there's a promo ad for Memphis Beat, all about the main character's ex-friend is in jail for a Crime He Didn't Commit and main character has to help him, and I'm watching the bits and thinking, "Aww, this looks just like 'Reunion'" and then, boom, I swear it's actually Vincent Ventresca behind the prison bars. And it is, and now I'm watching the damn episode because that is, indeed, how I roll, ten years later.

In other news, IT'S SPRING. Today was the first time in a few days that it was cooler and rainier--it's been warm and sunny since last week, and I have the sunburn to prove it--and so in consequence, apparently, I have been chipper and cheerful and giddy and gleeful. Until today, of course. I hope it's sunny again tomorrow.

This is not the WIP meme currently going around. This is the Crazy Crossover Idea meme that I might have just made up. List off the wacky crossover ideas you've had, started writing, and abandoned (but want to get back to), or those that you've had but haven't gotten around to starting yet.

1. Fitz Kreiner/Jack Harkness We're So Gay Married Vegas Caper Extravaganza. I think the only way I'll get this one written is if I have a solid weekend to remain perpetually drunk and/or high while writing. (I have a couple failed attempts lying about...somewhere.)

2. Toshiko Sato/Sally Sparrow Creepy London Fog story. This is mostly because I think Tosh and Sally would get along fabulously, and I've been wanting to write for ages a story about intelligent/evil/some-kind-of-plot-device fog every time its foggy out when I'm driving to work. (I have--one or two?--failed attempts lying about...somewhere.)

3. Secret Adventures of Jules Verne/Invisible Man wacky timestream crossing fic--mostly because I really, really want to put Rebecca Fogg in the beginning of the 21st century and see how she reacts. And maybe possibly slash her with Claire because they would be awesome together. (I once again have a failed attempt lying about on an external hard drive. This is an old, old fic that I'll probably never get back to, alas.)

4. Legend/Stargate SG-1. I've got a start to it sitting in GoogleDocs but it's not nearly cracky enough, and I need to immerse myself in both early SG-1 and Legend in order to get everyone's voices right. And, oh yeah, come up with a plot resolution. (Mostly, I just want Jack and Ernest Pratt to eye each other suspiciously and Ernest then to offer Jack something to drink, all while Ramos and Carter are geeking out at each other and Bartok and Daniel are causing havoc off-stage. As it were.)

5. Georgette Heyer/Stargate SG-1 fusion. OMG I WANT TO WRITE THIS SO BADLY. Vala as a cross-dressing highwayman! Daniel as the bored love interest exasperated by her constant attempts to steal from him! Jack's his best friend, Vala totally opens the whole story by taking out Cam's carriage--I'm sure I can work it so that he's left without pants--and Teal'c is an exiled French nobleman with horrifying republican sympathies who nonetheless fled during the Terror and is both a dandy *and* has all the social gossip. Carter is Vala's friend and the only one who knows Vala is in fact a woman, Janet totally needs to be worked in somehow, Siler is probably somebody's long-suffering valet--Harriman is *totally* Jack's long-suffering valet--and I think I'll need another solid weekend or three of constant drunkenness in order to write this one too. Hmmmm. Maybe *that's* what I need to do this weekend! Ahem. (I haven't even started this one. I just keep thinking how IT NEEDS TO BE DONE.)
wishfulaces: (sundays)
I went shopping today expressly and specifically for a dressy red top. It didn't have to be red necessarily, it could have been blue or purple or some other color, but I wanted a dressy solid-colored top to go with a patterned skirt I have, for which I only have one blouse really that I cold wear with it, and that's far too summery to wear in weather like this. Besides, I don't have many dressy red tops, and I look good in red. All very simple, right?

Two hours later, by the time I finally went home after visiting three stores, I had spent over $100 on new underwear, pajama bottoms, a new set of sheets, a t-shirt, and a nice cream-colored top that is also not very appropriate for this type of weather. And I discovered when I got home and took the sheets out of their packaging--y'know, completely out of their packaging, never going to fit back into that little plastic thingy again--that I had absent-mindedly bought the wrong size sheets. I could try to force them back into the packaging and take them back, but that just sounds like too much effort. They'll fit my bed, they'll just be too big. Fine. Whatever.

At least I baked zucchini bread today as well and it tastes awesome. So there, me.

On a much more cheering topic, I wanted to rec a couple vids I've been watching not at all obsessively of late. advance by fly_to_dawn, a multi-fandom vid for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, and it sort of makes me want to punch the air with how awesome these women are. And from Festivids, there's all the way by [livejournal.com profile] greensilver, which is basically the most gleeful thing I've seen about Invisible Man and about Bobby'n'Darien in a while. You all probably already know about them, but just in case, I feel a need to spread the fannish love.

ICE DAY!

Feb. 1st, 2011 07:13 pm
wishfulaces: (some kind of way out of here)
I suppose technically it is a snow day, since the snow has been falling all day (sideways; thank you, wind), but it was called yesterday afternoon in the midst of all the freezing rain, and earlier this morning I could see the ice lurking under the snow. So however you define it, I am glad not to be out there. Even if I barely have any milk left. Hmph.

(ETA: NO WORK TOMORROW EITHER. OMG I might even have to clean house if this keeps up!)

So! This calls for a meme. Obviously. Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8.

List fifteen of your favourite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, if they're so inclined.

1. Chiana, Farscape.
2. Wadsworth the butler, Clue.
3. Wash, Firefly.
4. Geoffrey Tennant, Slings & Arrows.
5. Mona Ellerby, Adderly.
6. Alec Hardison, Leverage.
7. Kate Beckett, Castle. (In part because Esposito & Ryan are such a duo I couldn't say one or the other?)
8. Cosmo, Singin' in the Rain.
9. Ray Vecchio, dueSouth (This is a COMPLETELY NEW development, as I know it used to be Ray Kowalski. But RayV has kinda edged him out in my rewatch of the past few months; and, really, I find RayK far more interesting these days with Fraser than by himself, largely due to the way Fraser reacts around him and that's a story the fandom's already gone through years ago so I'll shut up now.)
10. Illya Kuryakin, Man from UNCLE.
11. Hannibal Sefton, from the Benjamin January novels by Barbara Hambly.
12. Vala Mal Doran, Stargate SG-1
13. Darien Fawkes, Invisible Man.
14. Mason, Dead Like Me.
15. Death, from the Sandman graphic novels.

And no, I did not put Doctor Who on this list because I probably would have embarrassed myself and said Fitz Kreiner. Or be maddening and say the Doctor without specifying an incarnation. HA.

Okay, so I am in fact doing Yuletide this year, but whatever, I saw this on my flist and couldn't resist the opportunity to WRITE MORE FIC (since I've been kinda bad at that this year). So, originally stolen from [livejournal.com profile] cruelest_month, this is an alternative fic exchange.

I really hate not getting people gifts for Christmas or other winter holiday of your choice. And I really cannot afford to buy every awesome one of you the amazing gift you deserve.

So instead I would like to write you something that you would like to read.

Leverage last night was everything I could wish for out of one of their episodes. I was pretty much reduced to yelling "I love you, Hardison! I love you, Parker! I love you, Elliot!" etc. throughout the whole ep. Read more... )

And of course I'm out of town next Wednesday and probably not watching tv that night--I'm going to be in VEGAS, dammit, I kinda demand going out--so I won't be able to see the season finale till, um, Sunday probably.

Completely unrelatedly, I need to remember to buy M&Ms this weekend to bribe people at work to take our survey. Woo.

For one week, recommend/share:

Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Day four: a site
Day five: a youtube clip
Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

Driving home from my aunt's house, I decided: fuck this shit, let's have some fun.

So, have Well, Did you Evah? from High Society, as sung by Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.

And you might as well have Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, from Spamalot, too.

And here, possibly the most random picspam ever in the history of random picspams:

The Invisible Man comm [livejournal.com profile] hot_donuts is hosting a ficfest and is looking for prompts. You don't have to write in order to submit prompts. DOOOO IIIIIT!

(I should go submit some myself.)

Some of my best trip-planning happens almost entirely spontaneously. Just over a week ago a friend of mine said "We should do a road trip! STAT!" And instead of hemming and hawing as I normally would I said, "Tempt me some more!" And she said, "Long weekend!" And I said, "I could fly back instead of trying to drive back!" And now this weekend, I am going to Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana. I've never been to Arkansas! I was in Tennessee for approximately three hours once! I was only in NOLA for about five hours once! This is going to be awesome. And dizzyingly quick.

One of my co-workers found a manuscript of a spiritual written in 1832. "Second Great Awakening!" I cried in excitement. Apparently the son or grandson of the guy who wrote this spiritual was an atheist. "Because he grew up during the Second Great Awakening!" I cried in excitement, and our supervisor laughed. Some days, going to work really is worth it.

An American civic literacy quiz that somebody posted to one of the listservs I'm on: http://www.americancivicliteracy.org/resources/quiz.aspx

I took it a couple days ago and got 85%; I just took it again and still only got 90% (brain like a veritable sieve). What's both fascinating and appalling, though, are the statistics the group reports about how the general public and elected officials have done on this quiz. (Granted, stats are always wildly subject to interpretation, and out of their respondents it seems like a pretty small minority held some kind of elected office. The figures are still disappointing.)

*****

Arnaud de Fehrn was on The Mentalist last night. (I can't believe I just admitted to watching The Mentalist.) Is it wrong that what is presumably his real accent just sounds weird to me? (Probably not. I mean, I refer to poor Joel Bissonnette as Arnaud.)

*****

A DJ on the radio this evening was saying something about a TV show showing ten seconds of footage about some cool building in KC. (You can tell how closely I was paying attention to what he was saying, can't you?) He then went on to add, "But they were able to go back to Los Angeles a lot." Oh, radio DJ man, it's okay. Sometimes I really love coming from the Midwest. Flyover zone FTW!

New crossover wish because that is the way my geekiness lies: Albert Eberts, Ianto Jones, comparing notes.

They can be long-suffering together.

Um, nobody mentioned that Vincent Ventresca was going to be on In Plain Sight tonight. Or that his character lived in Indiana. And while he was on screen with Paul Ben-Victor for at most a second? It was still unexpected.

Doctor Who--today's ep )

And tonight I rewatched "Separation Anxiety" (Invisible Man) for the first time in ages, and I'd never even *noticed* before that Brock was an NCIS agent, and it made me wish that Gibbs would show up and slap somebody upside the head. Stuff like this is probably why I have weird fannish crossover dreams. Ah well.

NY Times article about discovering a sound recording made before Edison--sort of. (Don't need to sign in to read.)

Also media related, but in a completely, totally, and utterly different way:

BUY THIS. You know you want to. First season Invisible Man, people. DARIEN. BOBBY. CLAIRE. EBERTS. OFFICIAL. Shoo, go forth, buy it now and relive the awesomeness that is Team!Quicksilver. I'm waiting to see if my parents get it for me for my birthday; otherwise, no matter how broke I may be, I AM GETTING THIS. (It's only $30! How can you resist?)
