Tonight I saw the Yamato drummers of Japan and they were kickass. The choreography, the theatricality of the show, the backdrops and use of screens and lighting--seriously, the lighting, all these rich reds and oranges of sunrise or sunset and cold blues of twilight and night, and the transitions between were really well orchestrated--and, of course, the drumming itself was brilliant. Talk about fine muscle control, and I think the rhythms are still thrumming through me (I can't imagine how the drummers feel still, an hour or two after the show is over). One guy had John Shepard hair, which was surprising and a little distracting, and he happened to be the main goofball who happened to have a partner in crime that was not at all like Rodney McKay. Actually, John Shepard!hair helped me realize what some of the movements with the drum sticks were strongly reminding me of, why they felt so familiar--Teyla's stick fighting moves. (And speaking of hair, I totally developed an instant girl!crush on one of the drummers, all because of her fabulous, fabulous hair.)

Hey, look! [livejournal.com profile] lunate8 has podficced "Life in the 21st Century" - check it out!. I've never had anybody want to podfic the same story twice before, this is really cool. Actually, the response generally to this fic has been wicked and cool. Oh, Hardison, how you so awesome?

*

Okay, I'm getting up stupidly early for a weekend in order to go to a pub crawl for cancer with a bunch of people I don't know. This could either go fantastically or be one of the bigger mistakes of my life. Whoopee?

In other news, IT'S SPRING. Today was the first time in a few days that it was cooler and rainier--it's been warm and sunny since last week, and I have the sunburn to prove it--and so in consequence, apparently, I have been chipper and cheerful and giddy and gleeful. Until today, of course. I hope it's sunny again tomorrow.

Awesome thing from yesterday: random and unexpected 15-second clip from Stargate SG-1 in our temporary exhibit in the museum. (It was from that one ep, y'know, with the guy, the really *nice* guy with the shoes...okay, fine, it was "2001.") I heart my geeky co-workers, I truly do.

Awesome thing from today: I got a new computer at work. Specifically, a laptop with a docking station that has a huge-assed monitor. I've been waiting for my new computer for approximately six months, and this lil' laptop is shiny. I am excited that now maybe I'll be able to just carry it back and forth with me to and from the stacks, rather than having to turn computers on everywhere in order to verify information. Even if we don't have wi-fi in the stacks, this will still hopefully be more convenient.

I think my utterly shit mood for the past month or so can be summed up this way:

1. Work sucks.
2. Friends suck.
3. Social life generally sucks.
4. Weather both sucks and blows.
5. I am a whiny crybaby who needs to get over herself and her entitlement issues pronto.

Rinse, repeat ad nauseum.

Next weekend I go to New Orleans. If I do not see strange and wonderful things, get tipsy, go around wearing a t-shirt, and have a blast, I will be very, very, very disappointed in myself. (Actually, I'm mostly terrified it won't happen because the airlines fuck me over. I fully expect the airlines to fuck me over on this because I jinxed myself very specifically for this trip. GOOD TIMES.)

I am now going to flounce off in a sulk and watch "Prometheus Unbound" for the sheer pleasure of Vala and Daniel beating each other up.

This is not the WIP meme currently going around. This is the Crazy Crossover Idea meme that I might have just made up. List off the wacky crossover ideas you've had, started writing, and abandoned (but want to get back to), or those that you've had but haven't gotten around to starting yet.

1. Fitz Kreiner/Jack Harkness We're So Gay Married Vegas Caper Extravaganza. I think the only way I'll get this one written is if I have a solid weekend to remain perpetually drunk and/or high while writing. (I have a couple failed attempts lying about...somewhere.)

2. Toshiko Sato/Sally Sparrow Creepy London Fog story. This is mostly because I think Tosh and Sally would get along fabulously, and I've been wanting to write for ages a story about intelligent/evil/some-kind-of-plot-device fog every time its foggy out when I'm driving to work. (I have--one or two?--failed attempts lying about...somewhere.)

3. Secret Adventures of Jules Verne/Invisible Man wacky timestream crossing fic--mostly because I really, really want to put Rebecca Fogg in the beginning of the 21st century and see how she reacts. And maybe possibly slash her with Claire because they would be awesome together. (I once again have a failed attempt lying about on an external hard drive. This is an old, old fic that I'll probably never get back to, alas.)

4. Legend/Stargate SG-1. I've got a start to it sitting in GoogleDocs but it's not nearly cracky enough, and I need to immerse myself in both early SG-1 and Legend in order to get everyone's voices right. And, oh yeah, come up with a plot resolution. (Mostly, I just want Jack and Ernest Pratt to eye each other suspiciously and Ernest then to offer Jack something to drink, all while Ramos and Carter are geeking out at each other and Bartok and Daniel are causing havoc off-stage. As it were.)

5. Georgette Heyer/Stargate SG-1 fusion. OMG I WANT TO WRITE THIS SO BADLY. Vala as a cross-dressing highwayman! Daniel as the bored love interest exasperated by her constant attempts to steal from him! Jack's his best friend, Vala totally opens the whole story by taking out Cam's carriage--I'm sure I can work it so that he's left without pants--and Teal'c is an exiled French nobleman with horrifying republican sympathies who nonetheless fled during the Terror and is both a dandy *and* has all the social gossip. Carter is Vala's friend and the only one who knows Vala is in fact a woman, Janet totally needs to be worked in somehow, Siler is probably somebody's long-suffering valet--Harriman is *totally* Jack's long-suffering valet--and I think I'll need another solid weekend or three of constant drunkenness in order to write this one too. Hmmmm. Maybe *that's* what I need to do this weekend! Ahem. (I haven't even started this one. I just keep thinking how IT NEEDS TO BE DONE.)

ICE DAY!

Feb. 1st, 2011 07:13 pm
wishfulaces: (some kind of way out of here)
I suppose technically it is a snow day, since the snow has been falling all day (sideways; thank you, wind), but it was called yesterday afternoon in the midst of all the freezing rain, and earlier this morning I could see the ice lurking under the snow. So however you define it, I am glad not to be out there. Even if I barely have any milk left. Hmph.

(ETA: NO WORK TOMORROW EITHER. OMG I might even have to clean house if this keeps up!)

So! This calls for a meme. Obviously. Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8.

List fifteen of your favourite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, if they're so inclined.

1. Chiana, Farscape.
2. Wadsworth the butler, Clue.
3. Wash, Firefly.
4. Geoffrey Tennant, Slings & Arrows.
5. Mona Ellerby, Adderly.
6. Alec Hardison, Leverage.
7. Kate Beckett, Castle. (In part because Esposito & Ryan are such a duo I couldn't say one or the other?)
8. Cosmo, Singin' in the Rain.
9. Ray Vecchio, dueSouth (This is a COMPLETELY NEW development, as I know it used to be Ray Kowalski. But RayV has kinda edged him out in my rewatch of the past few months; and, really, I find RayK far more interesting these days with Fraser than by himself, largely due to the way Fraser reacts around him and that's a story the fandom's already gone through years ago so I'll shut up now.)
10. Illya Kuryakin, Man from UNCLE.
11. Hannibal Sefton, from the Benjamin January novels by Barbara Hambly.
12. Vala Mal Doran, Stargate SG-1
13. Darien Fawkes, Invisible Man.
14. Mason, Dead Like Me.
15. Death, from the Sandman graphic novels.

And no, I did not put Doctor Who on this list because I probably would have embarrassed myself and said Fitz Kreiner. Or be maddening and say the Doctor without specifying an incarnation. HA.

Title: T is for Time [subtitle: Non-Encounters of the Deeply Weird Kind]
Author: aces
Fandom(s): Stargate SG-1 (all seasons), Doctor Who (all eras)
Word count: approx. 3000 words
A/N: for [personal profile] fignewton’s crossover Alphabet Soup.
A/N, part 2: In the Eighth Doctor Adventures (EDAs), the novels produced by the BBC from the late 1990s through 2005, the 8th Doctor had an extreme bout of amnesia and spent well over a century on Earth attempting to recover from it. That period spans all of the 20th century and, well, you’ll see later why I mention it.
Summary: Never did they realize that really, he was all the same person.

* Thing 1: A PSA and friendly reminder to all those people out there driving in the snow: DON'T BE A DUMBASS.

* Thing 2: I got paid on Friday! This might seem like a fairly small achievement, considering I am in fact employed, but there was a moment or two of worry there last week. (And yes, I did have a Daniel Jackson moment. So exciting!...not really.)

* Thing 3: I have written three more fics in the past couple weeks, and I really want to work on at least a couple other ideas that are percolating. Fic-writing mojo, where were you hiding for so long???

* Thing 4: I also want to rewatch a bunch of different shows, including the first season of Castle and the entirety of Slings & Arrows. Thankfully both are small. I still don't quite know when I'm going to do that since I'm still in the midst of a second season Castle (hush, I know they're out of order) and entirety-of-dueSouth rewatch. And I've got my mom's DVDs of Simon & Simon and Adderly still and what the hell, it's winter, it's not like I'm going outside much these days anyway.

* Thing 5: Getting up in the morning is haaaaaard. Like, even harder than usual this week. This may have something to do with my abject cowering fear about driving on snowpack and ice. Though we did get permission to go into work at 9 today instead of our usual time.

Who drafted 17 retention schedule series in 90 minutes this afternoon?

I did, I did!

(Who the hell else would want to?

...

*crickets chirp*

...yeah, that's what I thought. I made a records management joke this evening, but I was in the car by myself, so at least nobody else was subjected to it. [I couldn't help it, though; I was driving past this new barnlike, warehouse-like day care monstrosity, and I thought, "Where you too can deposit your child for 8 hours a day for a nominal fee!*"])

I have not been sleeping well this week, despite being exhausted, because my brain won't shut up about work. I spent the past 6 months winding a project down, with very finite tasks that were completed each day; I have apparently forgotten how to handle actually being busy at work. And now I have a choir board retreat at oh-god-it's-too-early-for-Saturday o'clock tomorrow morning, so if I am not dead to the world before midnight and do not remain so until near eight, I shall be very annoyed with myself.

In the meantime, it's the SG-1 ep with the space corn on, and I just finished watching yet another second season ep of Castle because apparently I cannot get enough of the show. GOOD TIMES.

* Extra fees incurred whenever dropping off, picking up, or requesting to see your child. You see why my mind is a sick, sick place? I used to make Woodrow Wilson jokes, now I've moved on to RM jokes. HELP.

Fic what I wrote, by month:

obnoxious number of links, therefore cutting )

I'd never written dueSouth before, I wrote a remarkable # of fics involving Amelia Pond (...I am not surprised), I wrote more Leverage and quite respectably too, I continued to pair Ace up with other awesome women (including a god), and I'm a bit surprised I wrote that much SG-1 fic this year. Huh. I didn't make the whole one-fic-a-month goal I've been keeping the past few years (don't ask me why I have such a goal, other than it was something to do, and I think I shall drop it this year), but I still wrote a fair amount. And yes, most of it involved Doctor Who. First fandom, oldest fandom, fandom that is never gonna die. I'm okay with that. I also watched a ridiculous amount of Simon and Simon, Adderly, dueSouth, and probably other shows from the 1980s and 1990s, but I did not write fic for most of those forays into other eras. We should probably all be grateful.

I wish I had done more audio fic; I want to work on that. I also want to keep experimenting writing in new fandoms; I think I did better at that last year. And write more Amy/Rory and 11. Mostly because they make me REMARKABLY HAPPY, and I quite like that feeling.

Okay, so I am in fact doing Yuletide this year, but whatever, I saw this on my flist and couldn't resist the opportunity to WRITE MORE FIC (since I've been kinda bad at that this year). So, originally stolen from [livejournal.com profile] cruelest_month, this is an alternative fic exchange.

I really hate not getting people gifts for Christmas or other winter holiday of your choice. And I really cannot afford to buy every awesome one of you the amazing gift you deserve.

So instead I would like to write you something that you would like to read.

I have friends driving in from out of town this evening. The roads are still not recovered from the massive storm we had at Christmas. And now it's falling steadily again. Screw you, snow!

Hmph.

Fic what I wrote last year, in some rough form of chronological order of publishing date:

February:
Brush Up Your Shakespeare (SG-1, original!team)

March:
some bits and bobs, from prompts that I don't think I ever finished writing...bad me (Dalziel & Pascoe books by Reginald Hill and Man from UNCLE).

April:
Just a Little Confused (NCIS, for the [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest ficathon)
The Inestimable Value of a Good Pair of Shoes (DW, Harry Sullivan may be an imbecile but we love him dearly for it, for the [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen ficathon)

May:
A Funny Kommandant (Hogan's Heroes, also for the [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest ficathon)

June:
Three Time Travelers in a Boat (DW, for the EDA ficathon on [livejournal.com profile] henriettastreet)
Somebody Else's Conventional (DW, for same ficathon)

July:
Even the Smallest Ripple (DW, EDAs)
A Pleasant Road (SG-1, mostly Cam and Teal'c)

August:
a 5 things prompt (SG-1, 5 things left in Sam's luggage when she went to Atlantis)

September:
Choose Your Own Theft (Leverage/many other fandoms, PARKER RULES)

November:
another 5 things prompt (SG-1, 5 times Daniel was scary)
Sunshine for Your Love (DW, Polly/Martha for the [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon)
Thick-Skinned (I-man, Our Heroes Three for the [livejournal.com profile] hot_donuts ficathon)

December:
Of Ogrons and Butterflies (DW, Martha and Benny)
day in the life (DW, Fitz-at-Torchwood)
Each Other (Man from UNCLE, for the Down the Chimney ficathon on [livejournal.com profile] muncle)
The full weight of our burdens (Dalziel & Pascoe books by Reginald Hill, for Yuletide)

And the two audio fics I read:
Twenty True Stories (DW, written by [livejournal.com profile] kindkit)
In Dulce Jubilo (SG-1, written by [livejournal.com profile] troyswann)

Now for some waffling on about the above )
wishfulaces: (gwen und rhys)
Hoi! If you have not read it yet, go take a gander at [livejournal.com profile] severa's All the Trappings of the Season. It is a lovely SG-1 holiday fic in which Vala learns the True Meaning of Christmas (or something like it). And there's mistletoe. You know how well mistletoe goes with Vala. (Okay, it was written for me, so I might be a little biased about how awesome it is. But only a little.)

Also, [livejournal.com profile] severa, your minions do not scare me! Even if I do feel a strange compulsion to join them...
wishfulaces: (twins)
So, [livejournal.com profile] troyswann, I did this without asking your permission. But I was looking around one day, thinking about what I could get you for a holiday present this year, and then I thought, "Hey, why don't I give that a shot?"

Therefore, I've recorded for your listening pleasure In Dulci Jubilo. You can find a link to it (just over 30 minutes, .mp3 format) here at sendspace.

I hope you like. And that you don't mind that I ruthlessly did this without mentioning it to you. :)
